Tai Chi

Euan Stewart teaches Tai Chi on Thursdays at 1pm

Although probably best known in the west as a meditative gentle exercise, Tai Chi Chuan, to give it its full name, is a martial art originally from China. Tai Chi is the name of the yin yang symbol and chuan simply means method, so Tai Chi Chuan is “the method of using or moving with the principles of yin and yang”.

The hand form is the most recognisable part of Tai Chi, the series of movements performed slowly and in unison. For students wishing to understand the martial aspects the hand form is the first stage of study, but for most people it is all they want to learn. Due to the nature of how it is practiced the hand form is suitable for all ages and abilities. At a beginner/intermediate level the benefits can include increased strength, flexibility, physical and mental relaxation, co-ordination and balance. As a student progresses they can hope to achieve a deeper understanding of the world around them through understanding the interplay of yin and yang.
